Living and renting in Durham
Average rent for student accommodation
The amount of cash that you’ll be forking out on a weekly basis will mainly depend on where you choose to live, and the quality of the property. In Durham, you’ll have two main choices:
- Claypath: £95.00-£125.00
- Viaduct: £90.00-£140.00
The most popular student areas
Both Claypath and the viaduct are in the city centre, and are just a short walk from the university campuses. Durham is a tiny city, so you’re never more than a ten minute walk away from your lecture or the popular student bars. There’s also two small Tesco stores and a Marks and Spencer in the centre for stocking up on groceries. If you’re after a bigger shop, a large Tesco and Sainsbury’s is just a short bus ride away.
Heading out of the city, you’ll find that cheaper property can be found in the Gilesgate area. Remember though that you’ll have to spend more time and money on getting into town every day.
